Past Perfect
Formula
Subject + had + past participle (V3)
When to Use
- Action completed BEFORE another past action
- The "earlier" of two past events
- With signal words: before, after, already, just, when, by the time
Memory Tip
Past Perfect = the EARLIER of two past events. Timeline: Past Perfect (earlier) → Past Simple (later) → Now. "I had eaten (first) before she arrived (second)." Whenever you say BEFORE or AFTER with two past actions, the first/earlier action needs Past Perfect!
English Explanation
Past Perfect describes an action completed before another past action. It is always the "older" past when two past events are mentioned together.
- Positive: Subject + had + V3
- Negative: Subject + had + not + V3
- Question: Had + subject + V3?
Key Pattern

- ❌ I had went → ✅ I had gone
- ❌ She had ate → ✅ She had eaten
