Memory Tip

Past Continuous = background action in the past. "I was studying (background) WHEN the lights went off." The studying was the ongoing scene — then something cut it short!

English Explanation

Past Continuous shows an action that was ongoing at a specific past point. Often paired with Past Simple to show interruption. Key words: while, when, at that time, at 5 PM yesterday.

  • Positive: Subject + was/were + verb+ing
  • Negative: Subject + was/were + not + verb+ing
